Vocational Education

Vocational education is a valued component of the curriculum at Ashfield Boys High School.  Students have opportunities to access TAFE courses of Study Specialised courses in vocational education, for example work studies.

Work related courses are now an integral part of the curriculum as students can accumulate TAFE accreditation as part of their HSC students.  Up to 40% of students participate.  Numerous vocational courses are accessed through Ultimo, Randwick, Enmore and Petersham TAFE.

Accredited school staff teach vocational courses in Retail, Hospitality, Business Services Administration, Information Technology and Construction.

Vocational education as a component of the HSC studies is supported by a flexible timetable which allows senior students to commence school studies earlier in the day and learn outside school in the afternoons.

Every year, two weeks are set aside for year 10 students to participate in the school work experience program.  Preparation involves individual interviews where students’ talents, interests and motivation are discussed to focus on particular career areas.  Work experience is monitored closely and each student is visited by staff.  After work experience, students are debriefed and receive recognition in the form of a certificate for a successful program.  Often boys are offered part-time jobs, apprenticeships and traineeships after their time in work experience.  It is pleasing to note that employers rate Ashfield Boys very highly and welcome their flexible and friendly approach.
