The Mentoring Approach

This year the Year 9 classes have been organised in a way that will allow us to maintain many of the initiatives begun by the Year 7 and 8 Teams.  Students are in the same class group for English, Science, History, Geography and PD/Health/PE.  A teacher mentor has been appointed to each class group in addition to the traditional Year Adviser.

The role of the Year 9 mentor is to support students in their learning by:

  • Maintaining the partnership with parents, begun by Year 7 and 8 Teams.

  • Developing and maintaining meaningful dialogue between the teachers of each class.

  • Supporting the students in learning how to learn through further development of the learning habits and by teaching the skills needed to make efficient and effective use of information.

  • Developing the skills and providing opportunities for students to reflect on and evaluate their own learning.

The Teams approach aims to foster the belief that learning is a life-long process and that all students can achieve and be successful.  This is a firm foundation on which to build the students’ future education so that our students can successfully take their place in society upon leaving school.
